Every November, Barnardsville Elementary holds a special event to honor the community’s veterans. Students, teachers and honored guests filled the gym with excitement for the morning festivities.
Third and fourth grade students gathered on the stage with eyes shining with pride. When the music began, their voices rose together in a heartfelt rendition of the national anthem. Afterwards three members of the Army National Guard marched to the center of the gym where they performed a flag-folding ceremony. The folded flag, crisp and perfect, symbolized the sacrifices made by those in the room.
To conclude the ceremony, everyone sang “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.” The gym radiated with the beautiful voices, and array of blue and white.
Afterward, the special guests and their families were encouraged to stay for breakfast. Veterans, students, and families shared stories and laughed over old memories. The annual breakfast is a small gesture but one filled with big meaning, reminding everyone of the importance of saying, “Thank you for your service.”
